Catalog Description:
School of Rock: Mastering Teaching for Student Success is a dynamic, practice-driven course designed to equip future educators with the essential skills to thrive in today’s classrooms. Using an engaging, “rock your classroom” mindset, students will develop effective strategies for classroom management, lesson planning, academic assessment, and professional growth.
The course emphasizes “rocking” every aspect of teaching—building positive, respectful classroom environments, designing purposeful and engaging lesson plans, and implementing strategies that support strong academic outcomes. Students will explore techniques to improve grading practices, provide meaningful feedback, and use data to guide instruction.
A strong focus is placed on developing authentic relationships with students, recognizing the critical role connection plays in motivation, behavior, and learning. In addition, students will examine pathways for ongoing professional development, reflective practice, and lifelong learning as educators.
Through interactive activities, case studies, and real-world applications, students will leave the course prepared to confidently manage a classroom, foster student success, and continuously grow as effective, impactful educators

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

· Adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of today’s generation
· Better create connections between community and students and workforce needs
· Assist students in moving outside of their comfort zone
· Focus on positivity and resolve the negative conflicts surrounding schools

Mercedes Rasmussen, M.A, M.Ed., is a business teacher and DECA sponsor with 25 years of experience in the secondary classroom and 2 years of experience as an instructor at the University level in the area of Teacher Education. She believes in the power of building strong relationships with students and building a warm and welcoming classroom environment. In her free time Mercedes enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 sons. She is passionate about helping teachers enhance and build curriculum that engages students and helps to build excitement and confidence.
