Catalog Description
Teachers often share concerns that with all the technology noise such as cell phones and laptops that students are no longer listening or not listening enough to understand concepts in the classroom. When foundation skills such as listening are ignored or taken for granted all subsequent learning is affected. Listening is too important to be disregarded but we need a new plan for students to understand how important appreciative listening is. This course will provide examples and practical strategies with a variety of ELA curriculum ideas that can get students back on track with listening when it is critical.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, Participants will be able to:
1) Develop new ways to explain activities and concepts in the classroom so that students will continue to focus on listening.
2) Understand many ways to assess outcomes focusing on literature and reading.
3) Assess new, creative activities to use in the classroom which will help students gain listening skills.
4) Differentiate between issues with listening and reading for their students and how this can help in the classroom.
5) Create new activities connecting podcasts and other useful activities with technology to help students critically think.
6) Understand the importance of appreciative listening when discussing and understanding literature.
Textbook/Materials
Learning Management System: Internet access, connection to Canvas learning management system portal.
Novel and podcasts together:(both books will be needed for the course)
