Course Description:
This graduate-level course explores the key arguments, research, and implications of Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation. Educators will examine the rise of anxiety and mental health challenges among students in relation to technology, social media, and shifting childhood experiences. Through in-depth readings, analysis, discussion, and applied projects, teachers will develop strategies for fostering digital wellness, resilience, and balanced learning environments.
LEARNING GOALS and OUTCOMES:
By the end of this graduate-level course inspired by The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, teachers will:Analyze key arguments and research presented in The Anxious Generation to understand the social, psychological, and developmental effects of digital technology on today’s youth.
Evaluate how rising rates of anxiety, depression, and social isolation among students connect to cultural, environmental, and technological changes.
Reflect on their own classroom, school, and community contexts to identify factors that contribute to or mitigate student anxiety and disengagement.
Apply evidence-based strategies and classroom practices that foster emotional resilience, social connection, and healthy technology use among students.
Design developmentally appropriate interventions, routines, and learning environments that promote student well-being and attention in the digital age.
Collaborate and discuss with peers to examine diverse perspectives and share practical solutions for supporting students’ mental health and learning engagement.
Synthesize course readings, discussions, and personal insights into a comprehensive final reflection or action plan demonstrating how their teaching practice will evolve to better support student well-being.
