The ABC's of Google Suites for Teachers: Breaking it Down

Hi! My name is Jill Calhoun and I have been a business and computer teacher since 2005 in Olathe, Kansas. I received my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and my Master’s in Education from Avila University. I am married and have one son. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading and spending time with family and friends.

I have been an online continuing educator since 2013. I had taken a lot of online classes to move over on the pay scale and realized I could teach the courses! My highest enrolled course with The Connected Classroom is “The ABCs of the Google Suite”. In this class the educators learn about the Google Suite (Google Doc, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Forms and Google Sites).

When I develop a class, I try to come up with assignments the educator can use in their classroom. As a computer teacher, I know how these resources can be and are used in the classroom, so I try to cater my directions to real world applications. I also try to give the educator ideas how they can use them.

Because I am not there with you while you are working, I have done my best to show you how to do each assignment through detailed instructions and screenshots. I always get a lot of positive feedback on this from past students. I am a visual learner so I have created my lessons around this learning style. However, if you ever have questions, I am available to answer them via email, text or phone call.

One of the most popular lessons in this class is Google Forms. Google Forms is something I hadn’t used a lot until recently, and I love it! I use them as an exit ticket, to collect info from students or to give assignments or quizzes. It’s so easy for the students to fill out! And if it’s set up as a quiz then it grades the student’s responses for you!

Another popular lesson in this class is Google Sites. I never knew how easy it was to create a website until I started creating this class. Google Sites takes the guessing game out of creating a website. A lot of students use this lesson to make a class website. This is something I also teach to my middle school students and they really like it.

You will learn some great tools that you can use in your class!
