3 Hours Graduate Level Credit (ED501) through Colorado State University - Pueblo

Course Facilitator: Lin Mohr

Instructor of Record: Jennifer Hair

ONLINE AND SELF-PACED

Course Description:

It is universally agreed in the world of education that teachers who create a positive, nurturing environment where students feel understood and supported are more likely to drive student success. With the COVID-19 pandemic upending the conventional school environment, teachers and leaders are facing a unique challenge than ever for building relationships with students in a hybrid or remote learning setting as we enter this uncharted territory. The social and emotional components of learning, such as the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with teachers and each other, are key to building a positive learning community where students feel a sense of belonging and more inclined to be participatory in learning activities.

This course provided an opportunity for teaching staff to explore culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches with a lens through equity, diversity and inclusivity to support students and their families with the transition from the in-person classroom to the online learning experience. As we form a professional learning network through the course study, we will look at strategies, tools and resources through discussion, case studies, independent research, field study and connecting with practicing professionals to develop personalized growth plans to build strong and trustworthy relationships with our students in the blended and online learning environment. In addition, we will explore ways to improve classroom management challenges in virtual settings through relationship building. Active participation and successful completion of the coursework will help teachers to foster an impactful relationship with students and convert their hybrid or online classrooms into a culturally responsive and equitable learning environment for students.
